Saturday evening, Dave and I made the hour drive from the Elite Dream Machines Car Show at Mohegan Sun to New Haven, for a benefit cruise night/car wash, hosted by the Hard Hittin’ Lowz Car Club, in memory of Detective Rafael Segarra. Segarra was 44 when he died. He had diabetes and was in need of a kidney and liver transplant. He was unable to find a donor, caught pneumonia and passed away. The 18-year member of the New Haven Police Department earned four commendations during his career. All proceeds from the event were donated to Officer Segarra’s loving family.
Sam Rivera, a member of Hard Hittin’ Lowz, had invited Dave and me. “Not bad for a first cruise night,” Sam said. “I was hoping for a good turn out and we exceeded that. It was good to see the other car clubs come out and support our efforts.” HHL members Sergio Ortiz (President), Lilly Ortiz (First Lady), Tom and Lisa Martin, Michael Soto and many others were in attendance. Lilly ably manned the hot dog cart and did a brisk business.
Michael introduced us to Luis Miranda, who owns SGL Auto Sales and Services in Bridgeport. After seeing the Digital Auto Art that Dave had done of Michael’s Cutlass lowrider, Luis decided he wanted Dave to shoot his Harley and his sweet black BMW. We had been admiring the bike and BMW as we entered the show, not knowing they belonged to Luis. Another impromptu shoot took place with the Harley as Elusive Ryderz member Eve Ortiz straddled the seat and posed for a few shots for Dave.
As the sun started to drop and the shadows lengthened, it was time for the Twinkie-eating contest. We didn’t venture too close while this was taking place, as we have seen the potential end result enough times. We knew Michael “Spanish Harlem” from Street Terminators was right in the middle of it, taking on all challengers! After cleaning himself up, we grabbed Michael for a shot of his family with their superb Avatar-liveried Pontiac Sunfire.
Hard Hittn’ Lowz put on a great event for a first cruise night. Hold another one and we’ll be back!
