Dave and I shook off the winter doldrums on Saturday at The Show of Dreams – Frank Maratta’s Auto & Race-A-Rama at the Better Living Center on the grounds of the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, MA. And what better way than looking at a good cross section of hot rods, imports, vintage, classic and muscle cars and bikes to get the first show of the 2013 season under our belts than at the 54th Maratta Show?

Ralph Barbagallo’s fine yellow Superbird and green Hemi ‘Cuda drew lots of admiring gazes, including mine. I had to smile when I saw Ralph’s daughter’s kid-size Dodge Charger on display. What else would a young tot drive? Sad to say, we couldn’t seem to find Ralph. I’m sure we’ll see him at one of the Burger King cruises. Continue reading

The City of Middletown, Downtown Business District, Over the Hill Gang Eastern Chapter Car Club, Route 66 Cruisers, Liberty Bank, Charles Computer Services, NAPA Auto Parts, Servpro and Home Team Supply served as event sponsors. What would a car show in Newington be without Don Gallant, owner of the famous Don’s Speed Shop? If you’ve ever been on the Berlin Turnpike, you’ve seen Don’s shop. “I opened the Speed Shop when I was 20. I’m 82 now,” Gallant said.

Don and his family bought along their famed ’27 T-Bucket to the 2012 edition of Cruising Newington, held on June 14th in a packed Market Square. Continue reading

E.J.K. Car Show – June 3, 2012

EJK060312 007After the weather gods intervened and changed the show to Sunday, June 3rd, Dave and I hit the road to Xavier High School for the Eric J. Kalber Memorial Car Show.

Where to start looking? Within seconds of arriving I was distracted by shiny things, three of them in fact, so the Middletown Toyota display with its trio of new vehicles, became our first stop. We met Lori Heden and Alex Robson, and got an up-close and personal look at the 2013 Scion FR-S, which Alex said was just released to dealerships on Friday. With rear-wheel drive, 200hp boxer engine and six-speed transmission, Scion’s new baby looks like a winner to me. He also showed me a screaming yellow 2012 Scion tC and the cute 2012 iQ, while Lori was kind enough to pose with the cars for Dave’s camera. Continue reading
