Benefit Car Show Raises Much-Needed Funds For Police Cadets

Twice monthly the Wethersfield Police Department (WPD) is a hub of activity. A group of 20 or so Police Cadets from Post 159, are immersed in extensive hands-on training that covers scenarios like how to handle domestic disturbances, felony motor vehicle stops, suspicious persons, building searches, DUI enforcement and traffic direction.

The community-oriented program is under the direction of the WPD, Chief James Cetran and the Cadet Advisors, led by Juvenile Detective Norberto Mendez. Cadets like town resident Brendan Aceto are taught leadership, teamwork and conflict resolution skills as well as the importance of academic excellence and volunteerism. Continue reading

Food Pantry Benefits From Annual Car Show

If Old Mother Hubbard had gone to the Rocky Hill Food Pantry last weekend, she would have found the shelves bare.

“We recently bought some basics but there’s not much on the shelves,” said Melissa Hicks, who became Human Services Director when retirement ended Mark Williams’ tenure earlier this year.

“The summer is the hardest part of the year for us, so we have to supplement with some financial donations to put the basics on our shelves. Our supply gets very low,” Hicks said of the Food Pantry, inaugurated by Williams 32 years ago. Continue reading
